Sex Workers Parade In Mardi Gras, Sydney 2006
Sex Workers and People with Disability Parade In Mardi Gras 4 MARCH 2006
Sex Workers, People With Disability and Supporters proudly marched on Saturday night among hundreds of other floats and communities from all over Australia. The float celebrated Mardi Gras, raised awareness about: sex workers and our human rights, people with disability and their rights to sexuality, and the link between people with a disability who are the clients of sex workers, and sex workers as sex experts, including seeing people with a disability. The float was organised by Scarlet Alliance member The Sex Workers Outreach Project of New South Wales, and supported by Scarlet Alliance and it's members, and joined by Touching BaseTouching Base is a not-for-profit project that has been active since October 2000, and is made up of sex workers, people with a disability, carers, advocates and supporters. Touching Base developed out of the need to assist people with disabilities and sex workers to connect with each other, focusing on access, discrimination, human rights and legal issues and the attitudinal barriers that these two marginalised communities can face. This year Touching Base was represented by the The Spastic Centre who also attended with hearfelt support of some wonderful carers and energetic and enthusiastic people with a disability who made their own signs which were proudly displayed at the top of their wheelchairs.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (Sydney Chapter) has their photo taken with naughty nurse from the sex worker contingent while pulling on her stethoscope!!!
Participants travelled from Scarlet Alliance member sex worker organisations and groups from around Australia, including The Sex Industry Network of South Australia (SIN), Sex Workers Outreach Project of Northern Territory (SWOPNT) and the new group VIXEN (Victorian Sex Industry Network). There was a local and national representation of sex workers from all over Australia, and diverse in age, background and gender. Sex workers have also marched in similar parades in Australian capital cities, including Pride in Perth (WA) and Feast Pride Day in Adelaide (SA). Sex workers are active members of their queer, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities as well as providing an avenue for "straight" identifying individuals to experiment with sexuality.
The theme was red, and the sex worker entry made a heap of noise! with trumpets, a travelling minstrel/cowboy, and lots of screaming and support from the crowd! It was a whole lot of fun!! If you have ever considered marching in Mardi Gras you should think about participating next year to make the sex worker contingent even more varied and diverse!
