"Carpenter attacks opposition over comments about his daughter" ABC Online 19 Sep 07

The Western Australian Premier, Alan Carpenter, has attacked the Liberal MP, Rob Johnson, over comments he made during debate on the Government's prostitution legislation.

Under the bill, brothels would be able to operate legally for the first time and it would be up to local councils to approve them.

The Opposition is concerned the laws will lead to a proliferation of brothels in the suburbs.

In Parliament yesterday, Liberal MP Rob Johnson questioned whether the Premier would want any of his daughters to become prostitutes.

During question time today, Mr Carpenter described the comments as grossly offensive.

"It is disgusting that someone of that sort of blinded bigotry is allowed to sit in a place like this and ventilate his horrific views of the world at will," he said.

Mr Johnson defended his comments in Parliament, saying he had no shame in making the comments.

"I ask any member would you like any of your daughters to go into this sort of trade and I think the answer would be no," he said.

"Because I can tell you that you can ask me the question and I won't be offended and I'll tell you no. The last thing I would want is my daughters involved in this dirty sleazy trade."
