"Sex industry: No need to licence solo sex workers" ABC Online, 13 August 2007
The Scarlet Alliance says solo sex workers are more discreet than brothels and should be left alone.
Western Australia's sex industry is calling on the State Government to resist any push to make independent sex workers apply for licences.
The Government is about to introduce legislation that will decriminalise brothels by making them apply for permits.
The Criminal Lawyers Association and the Opposition say the laws do not go far enough and should include sex workers who operate on their own.
But Janelle Fawkes from the Scarlet Alliance says solo sex workers are more discreet than brothels and should be left alone.
"Most people living next door to an individual or private sex worker would not even know that industry or business is taking place. There is certainly no reason why individual or private sex workers should be singled out," she said.
"Individual or private sex workers should be treated as very small businesses and not required to meet the usual planning requirements of large businesses."
