"Banning sex outcalls gives rise to violence," Christine Flatley, Courier Mail 28 Feb 07, page 14
Pimps are using standover tactics and violence towards workers in Queensland's illegal sex industry an adult industry advocacy group has warned.
In a report released yesterday, the Queensland Adult Business Association urged the state's police service and Government to do more to crack down on the state's illegal sex services.
The association said dangerous practices within the industry had increased since a recent Crime and Misconduct Commission report recommended escort services should remain outlawed.
It ignored that many illegal sex workers were working in dangerous conditions. "By the Government not legislating for outcalls, they'reallowing illegal operators to continue flourishing in Queensland and the illegal operators have a number of bad practices that people don't realise," QABA president, Yvette Skinner said.
"They use standover tactics on their girls. They can be quite quite violent towards the service providers working in the industry. They're very manipulative" Ms Skinner said it would be difficult to prevent all illegal operators but said a competitive market would help drive the majority of them out of the industry.
Police Minister Judy Spence said yesterday that "proactive policing" had almost halved prostitution offences in the past two years.
