"Council to Appeal Over Brothel," Jim Gainsford, Leader, 1 March 2005

Hurstville Council will launch an appeal against a Land and Environment ruling which has allowed a brothel to operate in the Riverwood shopping centre.

The court approved the brothel at 184B Belmore Road, Riverwood, on January 28, despite the concerns of residents living nearby.

The brothel is on the first floor of a mixed commercial and residential building in the main shopping strip.

Residents complained that the brothel was in direct view from their properties and that they experienced problems with patrons roaming the area.

The council’s report had recommended refusal on the grounds that it was within 200 metres of shops and close to schools and churches.

"The council was outraged that such a facility was allowed to operate at this site as it adjoins a residential area," Hurstville Mayor Joanne Morris said.

"We were amazed that the court gave this proposal the green light despite the concerns raised by local residents and that its ruling contradicts its own guidelines for the location of brothels."

"The Land and Environment Court felt that the impact of patrons would be minimal and that the issue of seeing the brothel could be solved by constructing a screen which would block any direct view. Council believes this approach is treating the local residents’ concerns in a flippant manner," Mayor Joanne Morris concluded.
