Abe Saffron is not long in the ground, but already it seems Marrickville’s mayor is keen to revive the Golden Age of Abe, when organised crime controlled the sex industry – and NSW’s finest took their cut.

Perhaps Mr Hanna needs reminding that selling sex services is a legal and legitimate business in our state – just like selling menswear.

Council currently receives four to five complaints a year about so called “illegal” brothels.

That is usually a euphemism for home-based sex workers who don’t want to give a cut of their earnings to big brothel owners.

Naturally enough, existing brothels don’t want competition.

Let’s not let their self-interest, in league with the moral squeamishness of a minority, get in the way of hardworking small business people earning an honest – and legal – dollar.
